Edwin Shaw
Our oldest known ‘Duke’, Edwin Shaw, died on Wednesday 4th May, 2022, aged 101, in a care home at Wakefield.
Edwin had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for a few years; but was able to celebrate his 100th birthday in style, with Regimental representation, card and gifts, for which he, and his family, were most grateful.
Edwin served in the 1/6th and 1/7th Battalions of the Regiment, in the Normandy campaign, but was taken prisoner from his slit trench, in Haalderen, The Netherlands, on 4th December, 1944. He was taken to Dresden before being repatriated at the end of the war and did not meet up with any other ‘Duke’ until a visit from a representative, for his 100th birthday celebrations, despite the Chief Executive of the building society he worked for being a former DWR Officer, unknown to him.
There was no funeral, but a commemoration service will be held by Leeds University Medical School, in May, 2023 and a cremation and service will be held in 2024.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and four step children.
Scott Flaving.
